The desire to possess a 1911 gun is the dream of every gun enthusiast. It is considered the symbolism of history, honor and pride. To carry a gun of such high esteem, a suitable 1911 holster is required. An average holster will not justify its value. The greatest gun requires the greatest holster.

This American classic was designed by John Browning. Little did he know his M1911 pistol would make history in arms and ammunitions. Even after a hundred years, the full size 1911 is still believed to be the most popular handgun.

Why the name 1911?

The 1911 pistol was adopted by the U.S. Army in the year 1911. Hence the name. The U.S. military services officially used the M1911 pistol from 1911 to 1985. Some U.S. troops continue to use it even today.

How to choose your holster?

The best 1911 holster is chosen based on the model of the pistol you would use and carry. Your method of carry also plays an important part while selecting the holster most suitable for your needs. Generally, the 1911 holster selected, must have these important features:

  • It should be completely safe; which implies, it must be able to hold your handgun properly.
  • It should be accessible (since most of the time the gun is kept for self-defense, it should have easy access)
  • Most importantly, it must be reliable and smooth for quick draw.
  • Retention is an important criterion for selection of a 1911 holster when considering concealed carry. Retention in this context means the ability of the holster to have a firm hold and contain the weapon, prevent movement or loosening of gun and falling out.
  • Make sure your 1911 holster provides complete cover for your pistol’s trigger guard!
  • The style as well as type of the holster will differ based on the level of concealment. The 1911 gun’s narrow frame makes it ideal for IWBs. The most common types are shoulder holsters, IWB and OWB.
  • The OWBs or outside waistband holsters provide comfort. As the name suggests, these are worn outside the belt and require a garment or other covering for effective concealment. These are generally considered for open carry.
  • The IWBs or inner waistband holsters and shoulder holsters are better for concealed carry. In an IWB, the holster is worn between the inside of the waistband and your body, attached to the belt with clips.
  • The material of the holster determines its comfort and several important qualities. Hence, proper and thorough research should be done on the type of material you would want to possess. The two most popular materials are- leather and kydex. Nylon is another optional material available.
  • Leather is the quintessential holster material for many due to its ability to mold and high comfort.
  • Kydex is easier to maintain and causes less wear and tear to the firearm.

Now that you understand the basic requirements needed in a suitable holster, it will be easier to find yourself the best one.
